Course Description: This web site is intended as a hybrid (online & face to face) course to support students at Norwood School so that they will be able to operate successfully in a laptop classroom. Participants learn proper handling of laptops and peripheral equipment. Basic skills with Microsoft Office software are reviewed, as well as file and folder management. Emphasis is placed on safe and ethical use of technology resources.

Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to...
1. Use and maintain a laptop computer on a wireless network safely and properly, with minimal teacher direction.
2. Troubleshoot basic computer problems, but know when to seek technology department assistance.
2. Work with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook files at a basic level.
3. Organize files and folders in a personal network space, and successfully transport files between school and home.
4. Demonstrate safe and appropriate use of Internet communication technologies.
5. Demonstrate ethical use of technology resources; respecting rules of privacy, intellectual property, and copyright.

 


Prior Knowledge

This course assumes students can already:

  • use a web browser

  • use Microsoft Word

Guidelines for Participation

Discussion Boards:
Your messages should be timely, relevant, specific, thoughtful, and positive. You must access the discussion board several times each week to check for new messages and post your own. Read the d-board evaluation rubric for full details on how you will be graded.

Online Chat Sessions:
During the course, we will have two synchronous online sessions. Your participation should demonstrate appropriate netiquette and ethical behavior which we will be learning about. Take turns, respond to questions, and participate actively.

Teams:
You will work on a team with other students to design and deliver a short lesson. To participate actively, you must communicate by email, do your share of the work, and do your share of the presentation. Read the team evaluation rubric for full details on how you will be graded.

Helper Tickets
At the discretion of the instructor, individuals may be "ticketed" for helping each other. Tickets have various point values and may be redeemed for special rewards or extra credit.

Please read the course calendar to know what is required each week. Each chapter will be covered in one week. If you are absent it is your responsibility to make up the work.
