Top Tips for Computer Protection at Home

1. Buy an Anti-Virus program, and make sure it is automatically staying up-to-date.  Run virus checks regularly, either automatically or manually.

2. Keep children safe online. Understand instant-messaging. Do not let your children play games online with strangers.  Talk to your children about guidelines for online safety, and adopt rules for Internet use.

3. Install a firewall to protect your systems from hackers. Cable or DSL modem providers often bundle their service with a firewall. Make sure your provider does. Windows XP has a built-in firewall - make sure it is enabled.

4. Run "Windows Update" regularly to download and install critical updates (free). This service from the Microsoft web site will automatically update your computer with security patches.

5. Download and install a spy-ware protection program such as AdAware (free). This program monitors your computer for programs that compromise privacy.

6. Download and install a pop-up blocker such as the Google Toolbar (free), which will stop annoying pop-up windows.

7. Understand email "spam" and use spam filtering from your provider.  Do not open suspicious e-mail attachments. Delete the e-mail, then empty the Deleted-Items folder.

8. Use Internet filtering/blocking software such as AOL's Parental Controls or CyberPatrol to block inappropriate sites and limit children's computer usage time.

9. Maintain your privacy. Identity theft, child safety, and credit card fraud are just a few of the privacy concerns facing consumers online today. Your best defense is a good offense. By using some basic precautions, you can reduce the odds of being a victim.

10. Be aware of "Phishing". Never give out your information online in response to an e-mail.  Likewise, never give out your information over the phone.
