Computer Purchase Recommendations

At Norwood for our desktop computers, we primarily purchase Dell computers, from http://www.dell.com. There are many other computer brands you may wish to consider.

For compatibility with our school network, we recommend a Windows PC computer running Windows XP, with Microsoft Office XP software.

We do not recommend that you use the Dell site to purchase a laptop for use at school. If you are interested in a laptop for use at school, we strongly recommend you purchase a school-approved Toshiba laptop through Richards Computer. Please contact the Norwood School Technology Office for more details on laptop purchases.

For Dell Desktops: We recommend you select a Dell "Dimension" for use at home, rather than an OptiPlex. We use the OptiPlex at school because it is more of a business class machine for use on a network. The Dimension machines should work well at home.

Recommended Desktop Computer Specifications:

Processor: at least 1.5 GHz processor (preferably 2.0GHz or better)

Memory: at least 512 MB RAM (preferably more)

Storage Drives:

  • Hard Drive – at least 20 GB (preferably more)

  • 3.5 Floppy Drive - for floppy disks, but only if you need to use them. We have stopped using floppy disks in favor of USB drives.

  • USB Drive - We recommend a USB drive instead, which can be purchased separately from Circuit City, Best Buy, or Staples. It plugs into the USB port that is standard on all computers.

  • CD / DVD - RW (Read/Write) Drive – can burn CDs or DVDs as well as play them.

Display: 17in monitor is standard size. Flat screen displays save space and do not radiate heat.

Video Card: Choose the standard graphics display card unless you are going to use your system for PC gaming, in which case opt for an upgraded video card.

Sound Card and Speakers: choose the default integrated sound card, unless you are going to use your PC as a stereo system. External speakers are available at Radio Shack for about $20.

Modem/Network Card for Internet Access: internal standard modem if you use dial-up Internet access, or choose a NIC card if you will be setting up a home network or adding cable or DSL).

Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition (XP Professional if you are going to network your computer).

Software: Microsoft Office XP Academic Standard

Virus Protection: Norton or McAfee

Peripherals: standard keyboard and mouse, your choice of other items like a scanner or printer.

Support: 3Yr Ltd. Warranty-3Yrs At-Home Service and Phone Support.

The Dell warranty and technical support is an important component because the Norwood Technology Office can not support your home computer.
