Trouble-shooting 101

If something is not working, try the following...

  • Are the power, network, and other cables properly plugged in?

  • Try shutting down and restarting (this can often solve a problem). If the computer is totally not responding, and won't shut down from the Start menu, you have to force it to turn off by holding down the power button for about 10 seconds. Then turn it back on.

  • Ask a friend or colleague for help -- they may have had a similar problem in the past, and know how to fix it.

  • For laptops, is the wireless network switch on?

  • If you are at school, is the computer offline? Look in the system tray for the offline icon. At home, you will always be offline.

The way to solve problems is by using the power of elimination. If you eliminate the number of possible variables causing a problem, you find the solution.

  • Eliminate possible software conflicts by closing all other programs, so that you only have the problematic program running.
  • Eliminate possible hardware issues by removing all unnecessary hardware devices.
  • Eliminate potential connection issues by making sure everything is properly plugged in. Test the network connectivity by seeing whether you can get to the Internet.
  • Swap computer components with known good working ones to determine if it's a hardware issue.
